Words that begin with a consonant sound:

  • /th/, /sh/, /ch/, /ph/ these two letter spellings of ONE sound move as one sound

  • /st/ like step, /br/ like brush, /cl/ like clock, /sw/ like swing, and /thr/ like three these words begin with two sounds that are blended but both sounds are distinctly spoken at the start of words, separate the first sound of the consonant blend from the second sound (RCM)

    1.      Separate the first SOUND from the word

    2.     Say the word without its first sound

    3.     Add the first sound to the end of the word + ay
